The German Goods and Products Testing Authority has identified important guidelines that must be taken into account when purchasing routers, noting that the range of choices for cable routers is not large, unlike DSL customers, who have a wide range of different models.
According to the authority, one of the important things to consider is that the router should be able to perform all the desired functions, as not every device that includes a modem can access the Internet on its own.
She explained that the higher the price of the "router", the more functions it provides to the user, but the user must evaluate his needs; Some people do not need a "media server" at home, but one of the most useful functions is the possibility of guests accessing the home network WLAN, but this does not mean automatic access to all (private) bands in the home network.
The German authority indicated that in addition to the fact that the function of making phone calls is one of the functions that must be taken into account when purchasing routers, given that sooner or later all remaining digital communications will be converted to the digital voice transmission standard via Internet Protocol (VoIP), which is based on The user currently needs a “router” that supports this standard in order to make phone calls via the landline network.
She stated that among the additional functions, the "router" can support wireless digital phones, known as DECT phones, and use the "router" devices as a basic base, so that the wireless phone can be paired with the "router" directly without the need for an additional base. The German technology expert, Alexander Koch, explained that the user can upgrade “router” or “modem” devices that are already running with modern functions, such as a faster wireless WLAN network, or running a “media server”, noting that in most cases the “router” can be connected. The new device is using the LAN cable.
He added that for cable connections, they can be upgraded with WLAN functions or "media server" services.
