Morocco plans to increase the percentage of clean renewable energy on the high-speed train, which was called "Al-Buraq" and was launched on Sunday, from 25 percent to 50 percent next year, according to several media reports, citing a statement from the country's railway office.
Moroccan King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Maaraje announced the start of work on the high-speed train in December 2018, which will start by replacing 25% of its fossil fuel needs with the date of 2022, increasing to 50% by 2023.
The high-speed train in Morocco is 350 kilometers between the cities of Tanja and Casablanca; it will reach the city of Marrakesh in 2025, according to the project plan.
Morocco's Railways Bureau, in a statement announcing the start of the Al-Buraq train said: "It is a project as part of the Kingdom's efforts to achieve energy transformation and carbon neutrality; it cuts emissions by about 120,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually in the short term."
The statement pointed out that the amount of carbon emissions that would be avoided by Morocco thanks to Al-Buraq train is equivalent to the cultivation of 4 million trees.
It is reported that Morocco plans to generate 52% of its energy mix from renewable sources by 2030.
The grid relies on renewable energy as future energy sources, helped by its proximity to European countries, and by exporting solar and wind electricity to it.
Late last month, a report by John Afrique on renewable energy in Morocco pointed out the Kingdom's importance to Europe in the field of hydrogen production as it is one of the clean energy sources whose prices have risen so far.
The report said: "Renewable energy sources are low-cost, gas pipelines exist, and North Africa's proximity to Europe is likely to be the most efficient and competitive solution for the old continent, with the production of green hydrogen still more than four to five times more expensive than fossil fuels."
