Android users have been warned of a new fraud that uses a fake version of Chrome to steal private and personal photos.

The last short text messages attack begins with a simple text message indicating that he sent a display to the recipient, but he was not delivered.

Then a link that transmits the victim to a fake web page is followed, where they are urged to download applications such as Chrome or the Android application of the delivery company.

Once installed, fake applications then start installing the harmful program, which can end up chaos in devices and deliver very personal files to pirates.

Unlike some attacks, which are trying to access banking information, this last threat is directed directly to your photo album, where he is fully able to download each of your photos and albums.

The security team in Kaspersky says the world leader in electronic security solutions and services, which discovered the fraud for the first time, that hackers can then use these images to achieve huge financial gains.

Besides many users who store images, such as passports and bank card details, there is also an opportunity to blackmail money from the victim if they have more pornographic classes, stored on their devices.

Threats dating back to 2018

Roaming Mantis is not new, as it was first discovered in parts of Asia in the year 2018.

However, this new warning has been issued as it seems now that it is spreading quickly throughout Europe with France and Germany currently in the most affected regions.

And if you are wondering whether these types of attacks are really working, the answer is yes.

Kaspersky issued data on the number of times that fake applications were downloaded, and it seems that thousands are deceived every day.

Indeed, the malicious version of Chrome has now been proven more than 65,000 times in France alone.

Speaking of this new threat, Kaspersky said: “About four years have passed since Kaspersky has first noticed the Roaming Mantis campaign, and since then, the criminal group has continued its offensive activities using various harmful programs.

In addition, the group has now sought its geography, by adding two European countries to the main targeted areas, and we expect these attacks in 2022 due to the strong financial motives..

It can be said that the advice is clear, delete any text messages if you are not sure of their source, and do not download any applications unless you are sure that they are from an official source.
