When you perform a search on Gmail, it is added to your search history, and will also appear in autocomplete on future searches. While this is a useful time-saving feature, you might be annoyed that some outdated searches come up. The simple solution is to delete your Gmail search history, which can be done on both mobile and desktop devices.

How to delete Gmail search history (Android and iOS)

Deleting your search history on a mobile device is an all-or-nothing thing. Unlike the desktop method, which we'll look at shortly, deleting any search history items on the Gmail mobile app is equivalent to pressing a nuclear button. Either wipe it completely or don't wipe it at all. You cannot select certain items to keep and some to delete.

If you don't mind, here's how to clear the entire group in one swipe.

Click the three horizontal lines at the top left of the screen, then scroll down to Settings.

Now tap on the email account whose history you want to clear.

Scroll down to Privacy and tap on Clear Previous Search.

You will then be warned that your Gmail search history will be cleared across all devices logged into your Gmail account. If you're ok with that, click Clear, and it's done.

On the other hand, if you'd rather get more specific and select a few searches to just finish, you'll need to put your phone to one side and head over to your desktop computer.

Open Gmail on your desktop and type in your desired search term. On the right, you'll see an X. Click on it to remove the search term from your history.

How to delete Gmail search history in batches (desktop)

The previous method only allows you to delete the search terms one by one. But what if you want to wage a real crusade and clear a lot of Gmail search history at the same time? There are worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon….

To do it this way, head over to My Google Activity and sign in to the respective Google account.

Under the Look in your activity box, click Filter by date and product.

Now scroll down the box, select Gmail, and click Apply. This way, all search results other than Gmail will be removed. Note though that it may take some time for newer search results to appear in the list. Also note that if you are using Google Workspace Gmail, you will need to select Google Apps, not Gmail.

You will now see the filtered results. To delete, simply click the large X to the right of each search result, work your way down the list, tick and delete as you go.

Or if you only want to delete by time period, click Delete dropdown to the right of Filter by date or product. You will now be presented with intervals that you can delete. One click to bomb everything in between those dates.
